Winterborne Houghton - Turnworth, circular walk - 9 miles

(Distances in miles are relative to the starting point)                         Page 1

1. Start from the telephone box in the village centre, near the church

   (Grid Ref: ST819 045).

Walk uphill for 50 yds between a garage on the left and Pound Cottage on the right.

Turn right and walk toward a gate through an undulating grassy area with a derelict shed at the top left corner.

Go through the gate and proceed through the field to a barn - 0.3 m (823 046) . Pass through the gate and turn left. Follow the path steeply uphill through another two gates, then over the brow of the hill and through a short steep hollow to a metal gate -

1 m (818 055) - (PICTURE). Beware fast moving traffic.

2. Cross the road and pass through a metal gate immediately opposite. Follow the path down another short steep hollow and then up toward an isolated marker post - 1.3 m (820 061). Turn right and head slightly downhill along a farm track for 400 yds -  you will see a TV transmitter mast at a bearing of 2 o/c.

At a second marker post (820 062), turn left and follow another track for 500 yds towards a junction with the next track at the bottom of a steep hollow -

1.9 m (820 069) where you will see several lambing pens on the right. Look for views to the left toward Combe Bottom and Ibberton Long Down (PICTURE).

3. Go through the gate on the opposite side of the track and then straight ahead, climbing steeply. (The area close to this gate may be extremely wet in winter). Pass through a 5 bar gate and continue up toward a blue marker beside two beech trees. Bear right and follow a level track around the field boundary for 350 yds to a junction - 2.4 m (818 075). You will see a steep valley ahead and a church on your right. Turn right beside 3 beech trees and follow a sunken track down to the road - 2.5 m (821 076). Turn right and continue to Turnworth Church. Immediately adjacent to the church, observe a house with a clock and a coat-of-arms in the wall.

If the church is not open, the key may be obtained from the cottage opposite.

4. Retrace your steps past the point where you entered the road, to a bridleway - 2.7 m (821 077). Turn left on to the bridleway which is a stony track. Just before the wood, take the right hand track - 2.8 m (818 076). In a further 20 yds, turn sharp right off the track and uphill with a plantation on your left. Continue past pheasant-rearing pens on the left towards a yellow marker which points slightly too far to the right. Take the second opening in the opposite hedge toward a tree in the centre of the field which you must keep on your left. Head toward a gap between 2 oak trees at the opposite side of the field.

Go over the stile and head at a bearing of 10 o/c past another tree towards a marker. At the marker, head downhill toward a new flint/brick house and bear left when you reach the track. Continue along the track behind the barn to a tarmac road - 3.1 (812 079). Keep right up the track opposite OKEDEN HOUSE and continue up a rough track to a gate into the wood at a marker post.

5. Pass through another gate at the end of the wood and continue along the track for a further 50 yds until you reach a marker post. Bear right at this post - 3.4 m (809 082). Continue uphill in a straight line toward a gate in the hedge - 3.6 m (807 085). To reach this gate you will have to skirt around the left hand side of a small plantation. Go through a gate in the hedge and enter RINGMOOR (PICTURES), the site of a medieval village. If the grass is low, you will see the ridges of the ancient village nearby and in the distance to the south you will have a view of the Isle of Wight on a clear day.
